Astragalus is a large genus of about 2,000 species of herbs and small shrubs, belonging to the legume family Fabaceae.
Astragalus root has been used in traditional chinese medicine(TCM) for thousands of years mostly for stimulating the immune system to ward off colds and flu. Traditionally also used in the treatment of weakness, edema, respiratory infections, diabetes, night sweats, diarrhea, heart disease, high blood pressure and immune support.

Studies have shown that astragalus has antiviral properties and stimulates certain parts of the immune system. Showing possibly that it is a good herb for the common cold and flu.
Traditionally in chinese medicine astragalus was used in the treatment of heart diseases and high blood pressure. Studies have shown those injected with astragalus that have congestive heart failure reported that the incidence of cardiac event was lower. It is thought to have a diuretic effect which would lower blood pressure and it may cause blood vessels to relax.
The saponins found in astragalus help prevent blood vessels from sticking together and fatty plaques from forming in the arteries of the heart which can block the flow of blood.
Astragalus is thought to be effective in treating respiratory infections aswell as chronic lung weakness.
Side Effects/Precautions
Astragalus has no known serious side-effects although it does interact with a variety of medication such as those that supress immunity. So its best to consult your health care provider before using astragalus.
Should not be taken in the presence of a fever.
