Information
Goldenseal is a perennial herb in the buttercup family Ranunculaceae, native to southeastern Canada and the northeastern United States.
The main active component of goldenseal is thought to be a compound called berberine which in lab tests has shown anti-microbial activity against a wide range of bacteria, fungus(candida) and other protozoa. Berberine may also activate white blood cells, making them more effective at fighting infection and strengthening the immune system.
Traditionally goldenseal has been used in the treatment of tonsillitis, skin problems fighting infection and inflammation, strengthens the immune system, colon, liver, pancreas, spleen, lymphatic and respiratory system, upper respiratory problems, stimulates the central nervous system, allergies, ulcers, cleanses the body, improves digestion, cold/flu and sore throats. Native american tribes also used goldenseal as an eye wash for eye problems.

Goldenseal is considered a natural antibiotic and is often recommended in the treatment of cold/flu aswell as alleivating the sore throat that accompanies, digestive tract disorders due to its anti-bacterial properties, upper respiratory infections and its anti-microbial effects against a wide range of protozoa.
Goldenseal is thought to help strengthen the immune system. One study has shown that goldenseal might help boost white blood cells (a measure of the infection-fighting ability of the immune system).
Goldenseal appears to have antiseptic properties in test tubes, it's sometimes used to disinfect cuts and scrapes. Traditionally was used topically for its anti-microbial properties.
Side Effects/Precautions
Goldenseal is considered safe for short-term use at recommended dosages. Rare side effects may include nausea and vomiting.
Do not use goldenseal without consulting a physician if you have had heart disease, diabetes, glaucoma, a stroke, or high blood pressure.
Should not be used by pregnant or nursing mothers. The berberine in the herb may cause the uterus to contract, increasing the risk of premature labor or miscarriage. Berberine may also be transferred through breast milk, causing life-threatening liver problems in nursing infants. Do not take on a daily basis for more than a week at a time.
