Juicing For Health - Introduction to Juicing
Juicing For Health
Juicing is one of the best ways to get a wide spectrum of plant sourced nutrients in an easy to make tasty drink. Juicing has taken off majorly in the last few years with its exposure and many touted health benefits. If you would like to see the studied and reported benefits of each fruit and vegetable click here.
I prefer to juice vegetables mostly the green ones mainly as they tend to be the best rebuilder and cleansers. Thats not to say fruit juice is useless as they have just as impressive health benefits but they tend to increase insulin more than the vegetable juices.
Juicing fresh is the best and in my opinion the only way to consume juice for health purposes. Store bought juices dont contain anywhere near the same nutrient content due to how their processed to enhance the shelf life. With this comes many preservitives and other unecessary ingredients.
So why juice?
Alot of the beneficial nutrients in fruit and vegetables are bound in the indigestable fibre, juicing helps seperate so all your left with is the nutrients. Juices are so rich in enzymes and other co-factors which make it easy to digest and assimilate especially for those with chronic digestive problems.
Juicing a variety of different fruit and vegetables is a great way to hit your target 5/9 fruit/vegetables recommend allowance.
Juicing fruit and vegetables provides you with easy to digest sources of vitamins, minerals, anti-oxidents, enzymes, numerous different studied phyto-chemicals which have shown anti-cancer and other great benefits and much more.
Clean your juicer
I always recommend to clean your juicer immediatley after juicing so that bacteria and mold growth dont occur. Ive heard some nasty stories of people leaving their juicers dirty for weeks. I will sometimes also run some ozonated water through it for an extra clean.
Consumption/Storage
To start please make sure you wash your produce very well before juicing, always go with organic fruit and vegetables if you can, if not then for many with hard skins such as cucumber you will need to peel the skin off due to the wax coating. This will lose alot of the nutrient content which is close to the surface.
Juice is best drank immediatley, although if you are careful you can refredigerate and store up to 24 hours with minimal loss to nutrient content. The reason it should be drank immediatley is because once oxygen gets to the juice it begins to oxidize which spoils and breaks down the nutrient content. If storing for later make sure as little air as possible gets in the glass. An opaque container will block out the light which will also help to break down the juice.
