Sage possesses potent antioxidant properties, and this proves to be helpful in bringing about a delay in the aging process and in reducing the harmful effects of free radicals.
In a double blind randomized and placebo-controlled trial, sage was found to be effective in the management of mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease.
Sage is traditionally recommended for digestive disorders such as indigestion, flatulence, colic and colitis. Due to its bitter properties it stimulates digestion by release of stomach acid, pancreatic enzymes and bile secretion. This in turn helps to cleanse the liver which makes it good for liver complaints.
Sage has volatile oils which have the capacity to induce a relaxant effect on the smooth muscle of the digestive tract. The volatile oils work in conjunction with the bitters making sage a powerful digestive aid.
Modern evidence supports Sage's effects as an anhidrotic, antibiotic, antifungal, astringent, antispasmodic, estrogenic, hypoglycemic, and tonic
Sage contains high levels of phytoestrogens which make it the perfect herb for those suffering from hot flashes and other menopausal symptoms. Phytoestrogens are weak mimicking estrogen compounds which lock up the receptors so more harmful estrogens arent absorbed thus helping to acheive hormonal balance.
Sage is considered a great tonic for the nervous system. Those suffering from nervous exhaustion and other disorders of the nervous system have noticed great benefits from supplementing with Sage.
Sage is very beneficial for those who excessively sweat, this is probably one of the benefits it is most commonly known for. Not only that Sage's effects on calming and supporting the nervous system also go along way to helping those who excessively sweat.
Side Effects/Precautions
Should not be used by those with seizure disorders or taken during pregnancy. Sage decreases milk supply so its best avoided with nursing mothers.
