Information
Saw palmetto extract is the fruit of Serenoa repens. It is rich in fatty acids and phytosterols. It has been used in traditional and alternative medicine for a variety of indications, most notably benign prostatic hyperplasia.
Traditionally saw palmetto has been used in acne vulgaris, asthma, appetite stimulant, benign prostatic hyperplasia, bronchitis, cancer, catarrh, cough, diarrhea, diuretic, enhancing sexual function, hair loss, high blood pressure, hormonal imbalances, increased lactation, impotence, indigestion, menstrual pain, migraine, painful menstruation cycles, sore throat, treatment of underdeveloped breasts, polycystic ovarian syndrome, urinary antiseptic and vaginal disorders.
Benefits
Many studies report saw palmettos efficiency in improving the symptoms of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH) such as nighttime urination, urinary flow, and overall quality of life. Research has shown in some studies that saw palmetto was as effective as prescription mediciation in relieving the symptoms.
Limited in vitro and animal model studies suggest possible anti-tumor activity and potential for use in the treatment of cancer. These results have not been substantiated with human trials.
Saw Palmetto is often recommended for male pattern hair loss. It's believed to work by blocking an enzyme (5-alpha-reductase) from allowing the hormone testosterone from being converted to another hormone namely dihydrotestosterone.
Side Effects/Precautions
Few severe side effects of saw palmetto are noted in the published scientific literature. The most common complaints involve the stomach and intestines, and include stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, bad breath, constipation, and diarrhea. Stomach upset caused by saw palmetto may be reduced by taking it with food.
Similarly, reports of headache, dizziness, insomnia, depression, breathing difficulties, muscle pain, high blood pressure, chest pain, abnormal heart rhythm, and heart disease have been reported, but are not clearly caused by saw palmetto. People with health conditions involving the stomach, liver, heart, or lungs should use caution.
The safety of saw palmetto for pregnant or nursing women, children, or people with kidney or liver disease hasn't been established.
