Valerian (Valeriana officinalis) is a hardy perennial flowering plant, with heads of sweetly scented pink or white flowers. Native to Europe and parts of Asia, Valerian has been introduced into North America.

Valerian root has had many uses over the centuries, including use as a condiment, a perfume, and as a medication.

Traditionally Valerian was used as a sedative, improving circulation, reducing mucus from colds, anxiety, fatigue, high blood pressure, insomnia, irritable bowel syndrome, menstrual and muscle cramps, nervousness, pain, spasms, stress and ulcers.

  • Valerian is one of the most recommended remedys for anxiety and nervousness. Although the mechanism of action remains unclear, it is thought that valerian has affinity for the GABA receptors. Valerian contains other compounds such as valeric acid and isovaltrate which are thought to contribue to the herbs mild sedative effect.

  • Cramps
  • Valerian is used as an antispasmodic particularly for abdominal cramps due to nervousness and for uterine cramps and menstrual agitation. Other studies show that valerian reduces the time it takes to fall asleep and improves the quality of sleep itself.

Side Effects/Precautions

Valerian generally appears to be safe some minor side effects reported are nausea, headaches, drowsiness and upset stomach.

Should not be mixed with anti-anxiety medication, hypnotics or other prescription sedatives. Should not be combined with alcohol.

Not to be used by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding due to lack of data on safety.

Do not take immediately before driving or operating heavy machinery because of the risk of drowsiness.
